League of Legends Riot Points were officially renamed RP at the 10th anniversary event for the release of Riot’s smash hit game. This was planned to coincide with the announcement of multiple new games by the studio. LOL was once Riot’s only major offering, but with the arrival of new titles, it made little sense to tie the name of a single in-game currency to the studio itself. It’s also no secret that when it comes to the gaming world and digital products, abbreviations are so in right now.
It’s important not to confuse RP, IP (Influence Points) and BE (Blue Essence). IP was until fairly recently, the primary currency accrued through playing the game. BE was first released at the start of the 2016 season as a way for players to unlock champions without spending their IP. These two in-game currencies were merged as of V7.22, meaning that all points earned in-game now fall under the banner of BE. You obtain Blue Essence by disenchanting the Champion Shards (contained in Champion Capsules) that are awarded when you level up in the game.
There are certain things in the game that can only be purchased using RP and others that can be obtained using either RP or BE. Below is a list of everything in LOL you can purchase using RP, with items that can also be acquired using BE highlighted in blue.
You can buy RP online through the League of Legends official store or through prepaid cards. To buy RP through the online store, follow these simple steps:
Prepaid cards are only available in certain regions and are region locked. Prepaid cards are currently only available in the North America (NA), Europe (EU) and Oceania (OCE) regions. Players in South-East Asia are served by the Garena Server and must use Garena Shells for all LOL purchases. Fortunately, Garena Shells can be purchased at a number of physical stores throughout SE Asia or online and can be used in any game hosted by Garena. To purchase RP using a prepaid card, simply follow steps 1-4 as described above. When choosing a payment method, select Prepaid Cards and then enter your code and click submit.
There are many websites offering options to buy and trade RP points or that offer prepaid cards. While some of these may be legitimate, we highly advise that you stick to the above-mentioned methods when attempting to purchase RP.
The amount of RP you can purchase and the cost of each bundle varies by region. In general, the cost is more or less the same no matter what currency you use for your purchase. These differences merely reflect regional variations and will only change relative to each other if a certain currency undergoes substantial changes in value. In North America, the minimum purchase is $5 while the maximum is $100 (this adjusted to different amounts for players in Canada). The minimum purchase for EU based servers (excl. Poland) is €2.50 (£2.25), while the maximum is €50 (£45). You can see the full list of prices by region in the League of Legends Fandom Wiki.
As with most titles that offer in-game purchases, RP is not absolutely necessary for you to play and enjoy League of Legends. Whether you should buy RP or not depends on a couple of factors:
Budget: Because RP is not absolutely necessary to progress in the game, your primary consideration before buying any should be whether you have the financial means to afford it. While new champions and skins are really cool, making your children skip meals or missing rent payments is not!
Personal preference: Some players enjoy the challenge and rewarding feeling of earning upgrades, new characters and bonuses by the sweat of their brow – or perhaps fingers. It’s also possible that you will spend your hard-earned cash on items that seem awesome in the moment but become boring rather quickly. On the other hand, some people are collectors of digital paraphernalia and truly enjoy their in-game purchases.
If you are looking to purchase League of Legends Riot Points (now known as RP), there are a number of factors to consider before moving ahead. These include things such as your personal budget, the availability of different payment methods in your region and whether you actually need RP for the items you wish to buy. It is possible to earn new champions and other rewards simply by accumulating Blue Essence (BE), but this can be time-consuming. On the other hand, certain items, bonuses and other rewards can only be purchased with RP. You also need RP to purchase event passes and Clash Premium tickets.
It is highly advisable to only buy RP through the official LOL client page or through prepaid cards sold by registered retailers. It is also important to remember that cards are region locked. Your RP will never expire and cannot be lost through inactivity. If you are new to League of Legends, consider playing for a while to see if you enjoy the game before you make any in-game purchases. We hope this guide provided you with everything you were looking for and more when it comes to League of Legends Riot Points.
